A Trip to Garmisch, Germany

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a town in Bavaria, Germany. It was established in 1935 when the two towns united to make the one that stands today. It’s a very popular destination for skiers, snowboarders, and hikers alike.

The mountains we snowboarded were Alpspitze and Kreuzeck. They are near the Zugspitze, but offer their own beauty and opportunity for a good day of snowboarding.

How Did We Get There?

We got lucky with this trip. A local organization was offering a free trip to go to Garmisch for free. That’s everything included; the bus, the hotel, and gear rental.

The trip was perfect, after work on a Friday we all swarmed the gear rental store and got fitted for everything we would need. We stuffed everything underneath the bus then herded ourselves onto the bus for the five hour trek to the resort.

By the time we got there, it was very, very late at night. We got checked in then immediately went to bed.

What Did We Do There?

The funny thing about it, is that this trip took place in April. April isn’t a great time for winter sports, let me just put that out there first and foremost. It was pretty warm, especially considering we were wearing all these heavy winter clothes.

Luckily, there was still snow up on the mountain. Some pretty good snow, actually, plenty of powder and no ice. Being that this was my second time snowboarding, I felt a bit more confident in my skills, so I wasn’t shutting down entire ski-lifts due to falling over myself and being dragged.

When we got to the top of the mountain, I was determined to not fall at all the whole day. And for a while, that was just what happened! I was carving, turning, and stopping so much better than I had the year prior. It actually made snowboarding more fun than it already was, which I didn’t think was possible.

A couple of my friends were much more advanced, so they went off to do their own thing, while it was me and one other friend who was about my skill level to adventure off on our own.

Garmisch Mountain

And adventure is definitely what we did, but not what we were looking for. As I mentioned previously, it was April, and it was pretty warm. As we made our way down the mountains, we noticed there was less and less snow. It got to the point where we were snowboarding, then all of a sudden the snow just stopped.

Like, it was all grass. As soon as we hit it, we panicked a bit which caused us to wobble and fall and roll a fair bit down the hill.

It didn’t hurt or anything, but it was rather funny honestly. The problem is, we were so far off course at this point, we didn’t know if we were even at the resort anymore. There was not a soul in sight, and not an ounce of civilization in sight. Just wilderness.

At this point, we had to carry our boards and hike through the forest trying to find something we recognized. There was a path in the woods, so we knew it was frequented by people. We followed this path down for over an hour. We were hot, exhausted, and were losing hope.

Eventually we found a chain link fence, and followed that until we saw a big parking lot full of cars. We continued to follow it until we saw the resort and made our way back to the hotel. We were beaten up and our pride was at an all-time low.

It was a lot of fun, but definitely not how we planned to spend our day!

No Snow

Heading Home

After a very adventurous day of “snowboarding,” we headed back to the resort to meet up with everyone else and to load up our gear for the long trip home.

Overall, it was a great last snowboarding trip, and I actually haven’t been snowboarding since. That kinda sucks, but oh well.
