How to Find the Best Deals on Flights

Believe it or not, flights are a lot more affordable than you might think. However, finding the best flight deals is an art form, and I will be your teacher. Yes, you could just go to Google, or Expedia, or whoever else and just buy the first tickets you see.

Or, you can save up to hundreds of dollars just by creatively booking your trip

I think the latter option is much better.

“How Can I Get Cheap Flights?”

That’s probably something you ask yourself whenever you are looking to travel.

Well let me let you in on a few secrets.

When and How to Book a Flight

There are many theories floating around the internet about when to buy flights to maximize savings. For me though, it boils down to three things.

  • Incognito Mode
  • Tuesday Night
  • Thinking Ahead

Let’s take a look at each one more in depth.

Best Flight Deals

Incognito Mode. Incognito mode is also known as private browsing. Pretty much, when you surf the internet, your browser history, cache, and cookies all get stored. They use this stored information to target you with ads, or in our case, jack up airline prices. That’s why you see ads show up for a certain product even though all you did was watch a YouTube video on the subject. They can also see you searching for flights over and over, so they will sneakily raise prices, without you really knowing what’s going on.

Don’t play into their games. This is how to enable Incognito Mode so that you can browse without all that nonsense being stored and used against you.

Incognito

On Google Chrome, hit the three dots in the top right hand corner, then click “Open New Incognito Window.” Boom. You’re all set.

Chrome Incognito

On Internet Explorer, hit the gear icon in the top right hand corner, hover over “Safety,” and click “InPrivate Browsing.”

Internet Explorer Incognito

On Mozilla Firefox, hit the three lines in the top right hand corner, and click “New Private Window.”

Tuesday Night. Now, in my experience, Tuesday night is the best night to buy plane tickets. This is an old trick my dad taught me, and he has been booking flights for years. So far this trick has worked for me as well. What you want to do is do your ticket purchasing on a Tuesday night, and make sure you are using Incognito Mode.

Thinking Ahead. Probably the biggest factor though, is not buying at the last minute. If you know you will be going on a trip in November, don’t wait until mid-October to do all of your ticket buying duties. The longer you wait, the more expensive it will be.

When is the Best Time to Fly?

Well, that is subjective. It all depends on where you are flying. For example, tropical destinations will typically be a bit more expensive during winter time because everyone will be going there to escape the treachery that is snow and the cold!

There is an easy way to find all of this out though.

Head on over to Google Flights. Google Flights has an awesome feature allowing you to see flight prices for each day of the month in a simple to understand format.

Just type in your destination, click on the calendar, and explore to find what days have the cheapest flights.

Write these days down, we will need them in a bit.

How to Use AirFareWatchDog

Airfarewatchdog is a great service to use. You just type in whatever airport you want to fly out of, and it will give you a list of the cheapest round-trip fares to many different locations.

AirFareWatchDog

This is great if you don’t know where to go, and you want some great ideas. You can even filter it by “Fare Type” which allows you to see just domestic flight, just international flights, or both.

There are many international flights for under $500, and this is a great place to start.

Booking through them is a bit of a hassle, but they absolutely give you a great idea as to what the cheap places to travel are.

How to Use Kiwi

Not the fruit. The travel service.

I’m a huge fan of Kiwi. Remember those dates we wrote down earlier? Let’s plug them into Kiwi. For this example, I will be using August 18 through the 23rd.

This is another great tool to use to find places to go, if you didn’t already have one in mind. I can even filter the results by price, so it will only show me flights under $500. Remember, these flights are international too.

Another amazing, amazing feature of Kiwi, which is what I plan to use on a future trip I’m planning, is their NOMAD feature.

NOMAD is a tool that plans a multi-country trip for you. I will be writing a post going over just NOMAD itself, but here is a brief overview.

So, let’s say I am departing from San Antonio. I can then choose multiple cities I want to visit, anywhere in the world. Or, they have pre-planned trips, you just select which continent you’d like to explore!.

Once you choose your desired cities, it will find the cheapest flights for each of these places, and combine them into one ticket bundle. That way, you do not have to book each ticket individually.

For example: Let’s say I am going from San Antonio to Rome, then to Paris, then to Budapest, then back to San Antonio. It will find the flight to Rome, then the flight from Rome to Paris, then from Paris to Budapest, then from Budapest back to San Antonio.

It bundles them all up into one package, you buy it, and your itinerary is sent to you.

This is an excellent resource to book large, multinational trips.

What About Travel Rewards Cards?

If you are looking for an amazing travel rewards card, then the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is your best bet.

You get double the points for every dollar you spend on travel. This includes paying for airfare, hotels, rental cars, and more. Adding on to this, your points are worth 25% more when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

For example, if you earn 50,000 points, that is worth $625 towards travel. Also, when you first open the card, if you spend $4,000 and pay it back within the first three months, that will grant you 60,000 bonus points; worth $750 towards travel.

Paying bills with it in the first three months will almost get you to that $4,000 mark just like that!
